Malta trip planner

A good Malta itinerary starts with where you stay and how you want to spend your days. Choose a base that fits your priorities, group nearby sights together, and leave room for lunch, shade and unplanned discoveries.

Start with the trip you actually want

Tell TABOMI your travel dates, arrival and departure times, where you are staying, who is travelling and what you enjoy. Include children’s ages, walking limits, whether you have a car, and anything you want to avoid. A family that wants beaches and science needs a different plan from a couple interested in architecture and long dinners.

Choose your base before filling the days

For a short culture-focused visit, start by comparing Valletta and Sliema. Valletta puts its historic streets on your doorstep; Sliema offers a waterfront setting across the harbour. For a holiday centred on the northern coast, compare Buġibba and Qawra with Mellieħa. These are starting points, not a universal ranking: compare the exact accommodation address with the places you want to visit.

How many days do you have?

With three full days, choose a compact introduction: Valletta, Mdina and Rabat, then one day based on your interests. With five to seven days, spread those outings apart and consider a separate Gozo day if the crossing suits your group. Arrival and departure days are not automatically full sightseeing days. Leave enough time for baggage, check-in and the airport journey.

Can you visit Malta without a car?

Yes. Build the plan around reachable clusters rather than a long island-wide checklist. Malta Public Transport’s journey planner gives route choices, walking connections and estimated journey times. Check the journey from your actual hotel, including the return leg. Allow extra time around reservations and airport departures. A taxi can be a deliberate convenience, but its cost belongs in the budget.

A relaxed planning pattern

Choose one main outing each day and a genuinely optional extra nearby. For example, combine Mdina with Rabat rather than attaching a distant beach visit. Keep a free afternoon if your party tires easily. A shorter day that everyone enjoys is a better fit than completing every landmark.

Make room for changing conditions

Check attraction opening days and ticket requirements before fixing the order. For outdoor days, use the local forecast and conditions on the day. Keep an indoor alternative such as Esplora or the Malta National Aquarium if it fits your interests and location. Boat trips are optional; say so clearly if anyone wants to avoid them.

Turn the guide into your own itinerary

Use the Plan my trip button and describe your priorities in your own words. Try: “Malta for three full days, two adults, staying in Sliema, no car, relaxed pace, food and history. We prefer no boat trips.” Add your dates and flight times before asking for the final plan.
