3 days in Malta without a car
For three full days without a car, keep each day in one area: Valletta on day one, Mdina and Rabat on day two, and a choice of science, coastal time or a slower city day on day three. This outline assumes three sightseeing days, excluding airport travel.
Before you start
Check your hotel address in the official bus journey planner. Valletta and Sliema are useful bases to compare for this route; a hotel farther north may mean a different daily order. Look up both outbound and return journeys for your date. Do not assume a short distance on the map means a quick door-to-door transfer.
Day 1: Valletta at your own pace
Morning: start near the city entrance and walk through the centre, keeping time for Upper Barrakka Gardens and harbour views. Choose one cultural visit that interests you rather than several ticketed stops. Midday: have lunch and a proper break. Afternoon: continue through the streets or along a manageable section of the waterfront, then return to your base before a relaxed dinner. Valletta has slopes and steps: choose your walking route around your mobility and energy.
Day 2: Mdina and Rabat together
Morning: travel to the Mdina and Rabat area, then explore Mdina’s lanes and viewpoints. Midday: stop in Rabat for lunch. Afternoon: choose a café and more time outdoors, or St Paul’s Catacombs if underground archaeology appeals. Heritage Malta describes interconnected underground passages and tombs; assess the setting and current access information before committing, especially with limited mobility or children who dislike enclosed spaces. Keep the rest of the day light.
Day 3: choose one direction
For science and hands-on discovery, make Esplora in Kalkara the main outing and check the day’s programme. For marine life and northern-coast time, consider the Malta National Aquarium in Qawra, followed by a meal or short local walk. For a slower finish, stay close to your accommodation and revisit a favourite place. Choose one of these options; combining them across the island defeats the relaxed pace.
What about Gozo or Comino?
Treat either as an alternative full-day priority, not an extra squeezed into this plan. Count the journey to the departure point, waiting, crossing and onward travel, as well as the return. If you have only three days, dislike boats or want minimal transfers, it is reasonable to stay on Malta. A longer stay gives you more flexibility.
If day three is your flight home
Replace the full-day outing with something close to your base. Work backwards from the airline’s airport-arrival guidance and leave a margin for the journey. Avoid making your last activity dependent on a boat crossing or a tight series of connections.
Adapt this plan
Travelling with children? Use one booked activity per day and protect meal and rest breaks. Limited walking? Shorten each cluster and check the exact access route with the venue. In hot or wet weather, change the order and select an indoor stop. The timetable should serve your group, not the other way around.
