Where to stay in Malta without a car
For a short first visit focused on culture, start by comparing Valletta and Sliema. For a trip centred on the northern coast, compare Buġibba, Qawra and Mellieħa. The right choice depends on your itinerary and exact hotel address, not just the town name.
Valletta: put the city first
Consider Valletta if historic streets, cultural visits and city evenings are the focus of your trip. Staying in the city reduces the need to travel in for those visits. Check the route from your accommodation to transport, especially if slopes, steps or luggage are a concern. It is less compelling if most of your planned days are on the northern coast.
Sliema: a waterfront base
Consider Sliema if you want a waterfront setting while keeping Valletta part of your itinerary. Compare the actual street and the walk to your chosen bus stop or ferry departure point. Check current ferry operation separately, and keep a land-based route in mind if you do not want boats. A seafront address and an inland address can produce quite different daily walks.
Buġibba and Qawra: plan around the north
Consider this area if you want northern-coast time and local outings such as the Malta National Aquarium. Check the walk between the property and transport, rather than assuming every hotel is close to a useful stop. If your priority is several Valletta visits, compare the repeated journeys before committing.
Mellieħa: choose the exact location carefully
Consider Mellieħa when a northern beach-focused holiday is your priority. Distinguish accommodation near the bay from accommodation in the village: the location affects walking and transport. Check the terrain and actual route before booking, particularly with a pushchair or limited mobility. For a brief city-and-history itinerary, weigh the extra travel against the setting you want.
A simple way to compare two hotels
Pick your three most important outings. Use the official journey planner from each hotel’s full address, for the time you expect to leave and return. Include walking and transfers. Then compare the room price alongside the cost and effort of those journeys. Choose the option that makes your most important days easier.
Questions to ask before booking
Is the walk to transport manageable with your luggage or children? Are meals available nearby at the times you need them? Is the room layout suitable for everyone? Does the property confirm the accessibility features you require? How will you reach the airport for your actual flight time? Check these directly instead of relying only on the headline location.
Do you need to change base?
For three days, one well-chosen base usually avoids the disruption of packing and check-in twice. A longer trip with very different priorities may justify a split stay. Compare the moving day against what it saves before deciding.
Get a plan before choosing a hotel
Tell TABOMI your dates, interests, who is travelling and that you will not have a car. Ask it to compare suitable areas and explain the transport trade-offs. Once you choose accommodation, add the exact base so the daily itinerary can be adjusted.
